On September 20, the 2nd Forum of Shandong Cord Blood Collection and Clinical Application was held successfully in Jinan. As in the national 12th Five-year Plan, the development planning of the field of stem cells was included in the government support priority, the stem cell industry ushered the great historical opportunity for development. This Forum of Cord Blood Collection and Clinical Application aimed at providing clinical medical workers with a professional academic exchange platform, further promoting the establishment of cord blood collection and clinical transplantation standardization process, providing a safe and effective stem cell medical service and dedicating to the research and development of stem cell and promotion of the application field to serve the public and benefit mankind. Nearly 400 of expert representatives from the departments of gynaecology and obstetrics and departments of blood of national hospitals at all levels attended the Forum.

This Forum was held by Shandong Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank (hereinafter referred to as the Shandong Cord Blood Bank) and divided into the meeting place of department of blood and that of the department of obstetrics and gynecology. Experts attending the Forum included Professor Shen Baijun, the expert of neoplastic hematologic disorder from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and chief scientist of Shandong Cord Blood Bank, Professor Sun Zimin, the vice president of Anhui Provincial Hospital, Professor Wang Xietong from Shandong Provincial Hospital, Professor Chen Lijun from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Professor Xu Yongping from the Second Hospital of Shandong University, Professor Luan Zuo, director of the department of blood of Beijing Navy General Hospital, Professor Luo Rongmu from BAYI Children Hospital of General Hospital of Beijing Military Region, Professor Huang Ning from Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital, Professor Zhou Fang from General Hospital of Jinan Military Region, Professor Ye Yuanhua from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, etc.

It was understood that Shandong Cord Blood Bank was the only formal legal cord blood bank in Shandong established according to the national planning and with the approval of National Health and Family Planning Commission. Since Shen Baijun, the expert of neoplastic hematologic disorder from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and chief scientist of Shandong Cord Blood Bank, successfully completed the world's first liposarcoma treatment with mixed cord blood instead of bone marrow transplant in 1991, the clinical application of cord blood of Shandong once attracted the attention of the world. Now both from cell implantation rate and survival rate data, the domestic cord blood stem cell transplantation level has reached the internationally advanced level and the role in the field of regenerative medicine is also attracting more and more attention of people. The cord blood transplantation is gradually praised highly by experts and scholars and has undergone great progress.

According to the statistics of New York Blood Center of America in 2013, more than 40,000 cases of cord blood transplantation had been made around the world. At present, the cord blood transplantation has become the newly developing method to treat diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia and lymphadenoma and the cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a third class medical technology is also promoted and applied in more and more hospitals. Long-term clinical research results show that compared with bone marrow or peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the cord blood stem cell transplantation has many advantages and is very precious biological resources with very broad clinical application prospect.
